Gowex Shares Plunge After Gotham City’s Critical Report

Gotham City Research, whose analysts include Daniel Yu, has published similar dossiers against four other companies since February 2013. Shares in all of those targets – software company Ebix, retailer Tile Shop, tech company Blucora and insurance claims processor Quindell – remain lower than the day before Gotham’s initial attacks, although they trade above the price targets set by Gotham. Goldman Sachs has been accused by two former female employees of gender discrimination and fostering a “boys club” atmosphere where sexualisation of women was endorsed and celebrated.

The plaintiffs allege in the filing that the bank pays its female vice-presidents, on average, 21 per cent less than comparable male vice-presidents, and that it pays female associates, on average, 8 per cent less than comparable male associates.

The filing alleges that work events were held at strip clubs, and in 2005, the bank “cautioned new associates in their orientation that while clients will ask to go to strip clubs, they should merely not ‘expense’ that entertainment”.

In the filing, Ms Orlich said she was denied opportunities to work as a trader, while a male colleague with no more experience was given a trading job. She alleged that senior managers challenged him to do push-ups on the trading floor due to his background in the Marine Corps.

One of the brightest stars of the Madrid stock market imploded on Sunday, after WiFi provider Let’s Gowex was forced to declare bankruptcy and admit that its chief executive and founder had falsified the company’s accounts for years.
“I made a voluntary confession in court. I want to collaborate with justice. I will face the consequences,” Mr García Martín said on Twitter. The posting followed a message saying: “I ask everyone for forgiveness. I am deeply sorry.” On Monday, the company’s staff issued a statement saying they were “in a state of complete shock” and were “considering taking legal action”, adding that they expected “support and prompt action by the authorities”.

High Court said its founder could face a jail sentence of more than 10 years. Last week he was charged with false accounting, distortion of economic and financial information, and insider trading. Following his testimony before the High Court on Monday, Garcia Martin had his passport seized and was banned from leaving Spain. He was also ordered to report to a court every week and was given 15 days to pay a 600,000-euro ($818,400) bail or face jail.

In the end, the most shocking part of Let’s Gowex SA’s implosion this month wasn’t that the Wi-Fi company, worth 1.9 billion euros ($2.6 billion) just three months ago, was a fraud. It’s that it wasn’t spotted sooner. Gowex founder Jenaro Garcia fabricated clients and contracts, listed a defunct company as a holding company for his stake in Gowex, and put numbers in reports that didn’t make any sense, even as matters of basic arithmetic.

It was all so brazen that Gotham City Research LLC, the short-seller whose July 1 report exposed the sham, even began to question whether its conclusion -- that Gowex was overstating revenues -- was off-base. “We were looking for things that might undermine our view,” Gotham founder Daniel Yu said in an interview last week in New York. “It was like that movie ‘Groundhog Day’ where we’re waking up, expecting to see a different outcome, but each day validates our thesis.”
